Three Core Values contribute to the effectiveness of the curriculum:
Empathy, Resiliency, and Hope.
Empathy
In learning about the uniqueness of trees and the stories trees have to tell, learners begin to have empathy for the living things in nature. This helps learners connect to nature through meaningful reflections and activities. From identifying tree species to examining what we can learn from tree rings, learners will have a more mindful approach to engaging in nature and with living things in nature.
Resiliency
Learners begin to personify trees by examining what stories we can learn from tree rings. Through comparing our own life stories to that of trees, we can see that we are resilient and have overcome challenges in life much like trees. Trees face daily threats of pests, disease, stormy weather, and harsh conditions, and yet they survive and thrive. By providing safe ways for learners to engage in nature, they can reflect on their role in the world and find hope.
Hope
Like trees, we face many challenges in our lives and the curriculum helps learners reflect on these challenges. Learners are reminded that they have an impact on the world they live in and they can be the hope they wish to see in the world. The curriculum helps learners see the natural world as a safe place to find solace and peace, something that can give them hope in a world of uncertainty.
